 Family Reads

While the nights are still chilly and our little ones are cooped up indoors, it’s the perfect time of year to start a family reading tradition. Many of our patrons already read together as a family, frequently stocking up on great reads at the Canton Free Library. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, “children who are read to at home enjoy a substantial advantage over children who are not.” We encourage all of our families to begin this activity, and discover some amazing stories along the way. We have classic and new adventures for families of all ages.

Take a family trip into the past with the Little House on the Prairie series, by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Kids like to compare their modern experiences to Laura’s in this well-known series. For our readers and listeners with shorter attention spans, we have the My First Little House Books series, adaptations of Laura’s stories with colorful illustrations.

Although a century and a half has passed since Abraham Lincoln lived, his name continues to appear on bestseller lists across the country.  Authors love to write about this popular American president. Some delve into his real life experiences, while others invent alternative tales for Honest Abe.  Experience the Lincoln craze for yourself during the month of February, Lincoln’s birth month, when you check out historical fiction from the Canton Free Library.

Pick up new release I am Abraham: A Novel of Lincoln and the Civil War by Jerome Charyn for presidential portrait that promises to be much more engaging than your high school textbooks. Narrated by Lincoln’s character, this novel explores his marriage to Kentucky belle Mary Todd, his complicated interactions with generals and senators, and his grief over the casualties of the Civil War. Charyn infuses this story with humor during dark times and well as Lincoln’s letters and speeches.
