 War Stories

The Canton Free Library is closed to observe Veterans’ Day on Tuesday, November 11th. According to, there are over one million veterans living in New York State. In honor of the men and women who have served our country, we’re featuring military fiction and biographies at the Canton Free Library.

Pick up Kirsten Holmstedt’s  Band of Sisters: American Women at War in Iraq for a portrait of life overseas. Included in this nonfiction work are the stories of the U.S.'s first female pilot to be shot down and survive, the military's first black female pilot in combat, and a nurse who struggles to save lives, including her own. Holmstedt explores the many jobs women perform in service.

 Novel November

Tell us a story. November is National Novel Writing Month, otherwise known as NaNoWriMo. Originated by writer Chis Baty in 1999, this annual event challenges writers across the world to write a 50,000-word rough draft in the 30 days of November. Some of our library’s most popular novels started as NaNoWriMo projects, including The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and Water for Elephants by Sarah Gruen. Join up this year, and perhaps your NaNoWriMo project could end up as a bestseller on our shelves as well!

If you’re up for the challenge, visit, a nonprofit site that creates a sense of community during this creative writing project. This site allows you to track your progress, get inspired, and meet fellow writers.

Ghost Stories

Happy Halloween from the Canton Free Library! Get in the spirit with a ghost story. Paranormal fiction is one of the highest-circulating genres in our library, and there’s no better time of year to enjoy it.

Check out the newly-released novel Rooms by NY Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver for an imaginative tale filled with hauntings and family secrets. After wealthy Richard Walker dies, his estranged family gathers to collect their inheritance. Long dead ghosts Alice and Sandra observe them, and make themselves known through the country house. When a new ghost arrives on the scene, the spirit and human realms collide.

In teen fiction, we have Ana Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake, a paranormal love story. Like his father before him, Cas Lowood hunts the undead, a vocation that brings him to a deserted Victorian house haunted by a violent ghost known as Ana. Cas finds unexpected love and horror as Ana’s story unfolds.
