 Earth Day Reads

Happy Earth Day! Earth day was first celebrated in 1970 by supporters of environmental protections. Four decades later, Earth Day has grown into an event that is celebrated by more than 192 countries.

At the Canton Free Library, we feel fortunate to be part of a community that cares about our environment and green living. We know that every day is Earth Day for many of you, and the CFL serves as a valuable resource for books on environmentally conscious lifestyles.  This week we invite all of our patrons to check out books that celebrate, educate, and raise awareness for Earth Day.

 National Library Week

This week is kind of a big deal in the library world. Across the nation, libraries are celebrating their integral role in schools and communities. The theme for National Library Week 2014 is “Lives change @ your library.” We’re encouraging patrons to share stories about how libraries impact their lives on a daily basis.

Need a little more encouragement? You could win Kindle Fire by sharing your library story. To join the fun and enter the contest, tell your library story through social media from April 14th-April 18th. Use the hashtag #LivesChange and/or #NLW14 when you tweet about how the library has changed your life. Another way to enter is to snap a library selfie that tells your story. Join the Loves change @ your library Flickr group or share on your favorite social media site using the hashtags #LivesChange and #NLW14. For more details and official rules, visit atyourlibrary.org/share-your-story-chance-win.

 Poetry at the CFL

T.S. Eliot wrote: “April is the cruelest month, breeding/Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing/Memory and desire, stirring/Dull roots with spring rain.” Respectfully, Mr. Eliot, I disagree. As the temperatures rise, there is much to look forward to and celebrate in April, including National Poetry Month.

Since 1996, schools and libraries across the United States have observed National Poetry Month, established by the Academy of American Poets. Throughout April we highlight the art of poetry, celebrating the literary achievements of past poets as well as new works by contemporary poets. We invite you to join the celebration by checking out our collections of poetry.
