National Library Week

April 9-15th is National Library Week, a time to promote, celebrate, and support libraries throughout our nation. Founded in 1958, the American Library Association sponsors this countrywide observance each April, encouraging people of all ages to visit their public, academic, and school libraries. This year the theme for National Library Week is “Libraries Transform,” highlighting how libraries change and adapt with the needs of their patrons, transforming individual lives and the world at large.

National Poetry Month

Almost a hundred years ago, poet Rainer Maria Rilke captured the beauty of this time of year with these words:

“After long rainy afternoons an hour
Comes with its shafts of golden light and flings
Them at the windows in a radiant shower,
And rain drops beat the panes like timorous wings”

-“In April” as translated by Jessie Lemont
