National Poetry Month

Almost a hundred years ago, poet Rainer Maria Rilke captured the beauty of this time of year with these words:

“After long rainy afternoons an hour
Comes with its shafts of golden light and flings
Them at the windows in a radiant shower,
And rain drops beat the panes like timorous wings”

-“In April” as translated by Jessie Lemont

World Poetry Day

According to un.org: “Poetry reaffirms our common humanity by revealing to us that individuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings.” March 21st is World Poetry Day, proclaimed to the United Nations during UNESCO’s 30th session in 1999. Join the Canton Free Library in celebrating “our common humanity” as expressed through verse by checking out poetry books.
