It was high time I read something by an Australian. Robert Hillman (the Australian) wrote The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted, which was so good that I blessed a cold and rainy Saturday because it allowed me the time I needed (away from spring yard work) to read the novel in almost one sitting!

Hillman’s prose was clean, spare, and deft.  With simple words, his characters took on multiple facets, refracting color and light and the beauty of complicated human relationships against the dark backdrop of the Holocaust and the Vietnam War.  The line of good and evil ran through each member of his eclectic literary cast, tying them together in a powerful, redemptive network, in spite of their flaws.

You may want to spend your next rainy Saturday in Australia at The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted.  There’s a romance there - but not what you might be expecting.
