Motorcycle Week!

@ Your Library

By Beverly Ewart

It’s National Motorcycle Week!

Dad was the “cool” teacher at the high school; he was a scuba instructor by night and rode to work on his motorcycle by day.  On the days that I rode with him to school it didn’t matter that I was last-picked for sports and considered nerdy; that motorcycle earned me some cool-points among my peers.

Better than elevated esteem at school, however, were our weekend road trips on dad’s bike, exploring the countryside and experiencing freedom!

Celebrate the spirit of freedom that a motorcycle on the open road evokes by checking out some of these titles:

  • Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values by Robert M. Pirsig.  Acclaimed as one of the most exciting books in the history of American letters, this modern epic became an instant bestseller upon publication in 1974, transforming a generation and continuing to inspire millions. Written for the rider who wants to be self-reliant while on the road, the book takes the reader through a series of practical, hands-on techniques designed to keep the bike in peak riding condition. In the classic Haynes style, the book uses picture-led chapters and clear step-by-step instructions to demonstrate the skills needed for basic maintenance both at home and on the trail. (A NF)
