CFL Weekly

@ Your Library

By Beverly Ewart

Congratulations to Amanda Jones, who, beginning October 3, will be serving as the new director of the Norwood Library!

Amanda has been with CFL for 12 years, most of that time serving as Front Desk Supervisor. We will miss her very much, and we wish her the best!

It is a lovely coincidence that October 1-7, 2017 is Mystery Series Week, since it is a mystery how we will get by without Amanda! Check out first in a series’ titles by any of these authors and you will discover why their popularity is no mystery :

  • Stephanie Barron: Jane Austen in Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor

  • Agatha Christie: Hercule Poirot in The Mysterious Affair at Styles

  • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: Sherlock Holmes in A Scandal in Bohemia

  • William Kent Krueger: Cork O’Connor in Iron Lake

  • Stieg Larsson: Lisbeth Salander in (the first of the Millennium Trilogy) The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

  • Louise Penny: Chief Inspector Armand Gamache in Still Life

  • Ellis Peters: Brother Cadfael in A Morbid Taste for Bones

  • Jacqueline Winspear: Maisie Dobbs in Maisie Dobbs

Children’s Programs:  Baby Storytime happens on Tuesdays from 10-10:45am. Children ages 0-18 months and their caregivers are invited to experience books, and participate in bounce rhymes, songs, finger plays, and social/play time. There is no registration necessary for this program.

Preschool Storytime meets Wednesday mornings from 10:30-11:15am. This popular program features books, flannel board stories, songs, finger plays, movement, and crafts. Preschool Storytime is designed for 3-5 year olds and their caregivers. No registration is needed.

Junior Writers Group for ages 8-12 meets the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 3:30-4:50. No registration is needed. Children brainstorm on a given theme, write and perhaps illustrate a short story, and share it with the group if they wish.

Be sure to put the Costume Swap on your schedule!  Thursday, October 5, from 3pm - 5pm.  Trade gently-used costumes with your friends and neighbors to make this Halloween one your kids won’t forget!

Teen Programs: Area teens, wave your geek flag proudly! Join Krista and the gang Fridays for an after school geek gathering! Let’s Play, our collaborative teen video game program, meets from 3pm - 5pm, followed by Anime Club from 5pm - 7pm. Let Krista know if you are interested in forming a carpool to attend teen programs at kbriggs@ncls.org.

Krista also has an outreach for teens at the high school, called CCS Nerd Club. This  group of Canton Central high-schoolers meet in the high school learning resources center.  CCS Nerd Club provides a space for teens to talk about the nerdy things they're into, like manga, anime, games, YouTubers, movies, books, or fandoms.

The school librarian, Ms. Julie Firman-Bailey gets the message out about the club through morning announcements and the distribution of flyers around the school. (Thank you!)

Don’t forget the new NCLS app: North Country Library System has a new app that is available to patrons.
